About Me
- ALASKA
- Scholars believe that Alaska's Native peoples descended from nomadic hunters and gatherers who crossed from Siberia to North America over the Bering Land Bridge about 20,000 years ago. In 1741 Danish explorer Vitus Bering encountered Alaska on a voyage from Siberia. His party came into contact with Alaska's Native peoples (the Eskimos, Indians and Aleuts), who were hunters and gatherers. Alaska became the 49th state on January 3, 1959, creating the largest state in the union. The nation again recognized the assets when oil was discovered in 1968 at Prudhoe Bay, North America's largest oil field. Today, Alaska is treasured for its beauty and vast supply of natural resources. The United States and Russia signed a treaty on March 30, 1867, to transfer Alaska to the United States. The deal was completed the following Oct. 18, when the Americans raised the Stars and Stripes over Sitka. Almost all Alaska residents speak English, but there are many languages here. For example, there are 21 Native languages spoken around the state.
